The following are two sections of Judith McGovern's notes from a previous version of this course. The material in them is now part of PHYS20672. These notes and the examples sheets on them should be covered in self-study by any student who has not taken that course or studied linear algebra elsewhere. They may also be useful for anyone who finds themselves a bit rusty on the basic maths used in this course. A shortened version of the material can be found in the appendix on vector spaces to the main notes.
